Parallel & Proverbs
A weekly literary miscellany

Western European proverb traditions are some of the most thoroughly documented in scholarship — partly because Europe printed earlier than most regions, and partly because the major paremiologists of the 20th century, including Wolfgang Mieder, worked primarily in this material.

Each language has its own register. Italian leans toward the elegant and image-rich (tra il dire e il fare c’è di mezzo il mare). German leans toward the structurally precise. French toward the gnomic. English toward the homely and pragmatic. Reading them side by side reveals as much about each culture’s stylistic preferences as about its philosophy.
